LCD Failures

Hardware failure – LCD, inverter, cable or backlight

Symptoms:

The laptop appears to start as usual but the screen is black, if you move it, it turns on and works properly. Failed cable.
The laptop appears to start as usual but the screen is very dark, although it changes colour a little and you can see a very feint image. Failed inverter or cable 90%/10%.
Immediately after starting the screen has dark pink/red tint and turns dark after a few seconds. Failed backlight.
The screen flickers a few times but then turns dark, if you move it or tap it lightly on the sides, it flickers again. Failed cable or LCD 50%/50%.
Screen is either black or white (no picture) and external monitor works. Failed cable or LCD 30%/70%.
There are stripes on the screen (either vertical or horizontal) that change when you move the screen or tap it lightly on the sides. Failed cable or LCD 10%/90%.
In all above cases, if you plug in an external monitor, everything shows fine on it (you have to plug it in before starting the laptop and may need to press the “Fn” key together with one of the “F1″ – “F10″ keys to make the laptop recognize the external monitor).

Troubleshooting:
If the screen is black, look for the “lid closed” switch and try pushing it a few times. It’s usually a small switch near the hinges that is pressed when the lid(the screen) is closed. Sometimes these switches get stuck in the “lid closed” position that results in black screen(no backlight) or non-starting laptop. Also some laptops have a magnetic switch (newer Dells, most Macs, etc.) that doesn’t get stuck.

The most common failures are (in this order): inverter, “lid closed” switch, cable, LCD, backlight.

HP introduces Accidental Damage Protection for Indian users

Computer maker HP today launched its new initiative ‘Accidental Damage Protection’ (ADP) to offer coverage against damage due to unintentional liquid spills, falls and electrical surge for its users in India….
“The service is currently available in India only and is designed to provide another layer of quality service to its customers, by protecting them from unexpected costs of repairs or replacing parts,” HP said in a statement.
Part of HP’s ‘Total Care’ initiative, the ADP is available as an additional feature in all Pavilion G and Pavilion DV class notebooks, it added.
ADP provides coverage against damage caused due to unintentional liquid spills on the unit, accidental drops or falls, and electrical surge and covers liquid crystal displays (LCDs), or parts damaged or broken in such incidents.

Laptop Battery Power Tips

In some respects, life as a laptop-carrying frequent flyer has gotten a little easier. Exhibit A: Though far from commonplace, it's not freakishly bizarre anymore to find a power port at your airplane seat--even in coach. Virgin America and American Airlines are among the most generous airlines in terms of supplying power ports to passengers.

But it's still way too easy to run out of juice in flight, or during the course of a long day away from a wall socket. Here are some tips for keeping your laptop running as long as possible when you're on the go.

Ditch the Peripherals, Tweak Settings
When you're on the road, you can significantly conserve battery power by dimming your laptop screen's brightness. Make sure there are no CDs or DVDs sitting in your optical drive, and don't connect any USB peripherals--all power hogs. Turn off Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and 3G networking (you have to do that in flight anyhow).

Also, tweak your laptop's power settings to conserve your battery. For example, in Windows Vista, go to Control Panel, Power Options and select the "Power saver" setting You can adjust the "Power saver" settings, if you want, or create your own power plan.

Buy a Second Battery
Many laptops today can run off two batteries. When the juice from the primary battery runs dry, the auxiliary kicks in. In most cases, the primary battery comes with the laptop; the second is an optional purchase. For example, HP's EliteBook 6930p promises up to 24 hours of use from one charge--but only if you attach an optional, external 12-cell ultra-capacity battery pack ($189) as a secondary battery to augment the laptop's internal, primary six-cell battery (There are other requirements, too, such as the need to downgrade to Windows XP.) Keep in mind that second battery packs, sometimes also called battery slices often add bulk and weight to your laptop.

Another option: Buy a portable battery pack. I like the Duracell Powersource Mobile 100 (about $110 and up online) because it lets you power a variety of devices, such as laptops, cell phones, portable DVD players, and video cameras, using their own power cords. By comparison, some portable power rechargers require special tips or cables to recharge your gear. The Duracell Powersource can also recharge two USB devices simultaneously with your laptop.

Get to Know Battery Specs
When buying a new laptop or a second laptop battery, pay attention to the power specs. Generally speaking, you need to know how many cells the battery has. The more cells, the longer the battery can last on a charge. For example, a 12-cell battery is designed to last much longer than a six-cell battery. Alternatively, the specs might list Watt-Hour rating, or WHr. The higher the number, the longer your battery should last. Some computer makers, such as Apple, describe laptop batteries in terms of WHr, while others use cells.

Check for Power Ports Before You Fly
Before I book a flight, I find out the type of aircraft I'll be on. Then I jump over to Seatguru.com, which offers helpful seating configuration maps for most domestic and international airlines. The black dots on seat maps indicate the presence of in-seat power ports. Keep in mind, though, that sometimes (especially in coach) you may have to share one power port with your neighbor.

Play Your Music on a Portable Player
Playing music or videos on your laptop is a great way to pass the time--and drain your battery. Music and audio files make frequent hits on your hard drive, which consumes battery power. If you need to work during a long flight, and yet you want to silence that crying baby in 12B, listen to music on your portable media player. That way you won't tax your laptop battery. Most airplanes today have an in-flight music system, which you can listen to even during take-off and landings (which you can't do with a portable electronic device).

Watch Videos on Your Hard Drive
Playing a video on a laptop's DVD drive eats battery power. Video playback from a hard drive, however, is less taxing. So for your next long flight, consider downloading a few movies or TV shows to your hard drive. Or convert your own DVDs into files you can play off your hard drive. As PCWorld.com blogger Rick Broida points out, you can use the popular open-source program Handbrake to rip DVDs into files for watching on a laptop or iPod/iPhone.

Windows 7 Overtakes XP, While Mac OS X Surpasses Vista in Market

The undisputed leader in the world of operating systems, Microsoft, has lost a battle in its dispute against Apple, but is far away from losing the war. Although not in a manner that Apple’s Mac OS X lovers would want, but still, a great victory for Apple. Also, the giant Microsoft also managed to outdo itself, and for the first time since its release back in 2001, Windows XP was dethroned by another Microsoft product: Windows 7.


Windows 7 Overtakes XP

As I mentioned earlier, since its arrival in 2001, Windows XP has gone to the top of the most used operating systems in the world, and has managed to keep that spot for almost 11 years, we bow our heads for Microsoft’s achievement. What is most important, is the fact that the mighty XP has lost the first place to another operating system, also produced by Microsoft, Windows 7, released in 2009, that has made a giant leap in only 3 short years.

If we look at the numbers, we can see that Windows 7 has taken the first place in the market share of operating systems, but just barely, rising over the old XP by only 0.24 percent. Although overtook, Windows XP still has a pretty big market share, at 42.52%, and the sum of both Windows XP and Windows 7 make a staggering 85.28% of the total operating system market.

Mac OS X Surpasses Vista

Mac users around the world have something to be happy about: the newest Mac OS X version has finally surpassed a Microsoft product. Windows Vista, one of Microsoft’s not so loved operating systems who only had a market share of ~6% has stepped down a notch and Mac OS X has risen to a market share of 7.13%. Also, the Mountain Lion OS produced by Apple is quickly rising, and I will not be surprised if it will pick more than we could expect.

The report was submitted by Net Applications and it gives us a better understanding of how operating systems are evolving and how the masses take to them. We are all curious to see if Microsoft’s newest addition to its arsenal of operating systems, Windows 8, will have such a big impact as its predecessors had, and also, how the other contenders, Mac OS X and Linux will evolve. But for now, Microsoft having the dominant share of the OS market, with a staggering 91.42% in desktop and 83% on all kinds of operating systems, Windows is still the undisputed champion.
